FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Whether you are at the beginning of your non-profit’s journey or your organization has been around for decades, a consultant can offer essential tools, strategies, and support. They bridge gaps where extra assistance is needed, advance your organization towards a greater level of sustainability, and unveil opportunities you may not have imagined achievable. At Serenity, we can help you develop fundraising strategies, manage and coordinate special events, identify funding sources, provide interim development management, and more. Enlisting the support of a consultant is a strategic investment in your organization’s progress.

  • Anytime! Organizations can start working with a consultant whenever they are ready to communicate their vision and have identified their desired activities and goals. Consultants can create comprehensive strategies for the length of the contract period and beyond. Should your organization need support for event planning and implementation, it is best for the consultant to have at least six weeks of lead time, but consultants are always ready to jump in.

  • Absolutely not! Our main focus is on small to medium-sized nonprofit organizations. No organization is too small when there is a purposeful mission, we are here to help take your nonprofit to the next level. Reach out to see how we can build a customized plan for your organization!

  • The short answer is no. Fundraisers, grant writers, and consultants should not be compensated based on "commission" as budgets cannot be allocated prior to the receipt of grants and gifts.

The practice of compensating nonprofit professionals based on funds raised is considered unethical industry-wide. As transparency should be a priority for all nonprofits, it is important that funders and donors understand exactly where their funds are being allocated, nonprofit professionals are fairly compensated for their time, effort, expertise, and deliverables regardless of award status (as many grant opportunities receive many more applications than can be funded, often the quality of the grant submitted is not the reason for the denial), and that Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP) and Federal Accounting Guidelines are followed and respected.

It is best to steer clear of even considering percentage or commission-based compensation because, at best, if funders and donors find out they can pull their support and funding, at worst there could be legal consequences for the professional and the organization.

  • The Certified Fund Raising Executive® designation is an internationally recognized credential that attests to the knowledge, skill, and achievements of a fundraising professional based on current and valid practice-based standards.
